On 6 December 2000 a new Municipal Council came into being, namely the Lephalale Municipality. This new Municipality is the result of an amalgamation of the previous two municipalities, namely Ellisras/Marapong Transitional Local Council and Ellisras/Tswelopele Transitional Local Council.

The Lephalale Municipality is the biggest municipality in the Limpopo Province, previously known as the Northern Province, in terms of geographical size, namely 19 605 square kilometers.

The main town in the municipality is Ellisras(“Lephalale”), situated between 23° and 24° s latitude. Distinctive bushveld landscape stretches from the Limpopo river in the west to the Waterberg in the south east.
Ellisras is positioned west of the Mokolo river, a tributary to the Limpopo river, 900 meters above sea level.

The Ellisras/Lephalale area offers:

  • a gateway to Botswana
  • interlinking tarred roads from all directions
  • a tarred runway/airfield
  • a climate that is conducive to outdoor life
  • a prosperous town that serves as a regional center
  • wonderful tourism, sport and recreation facilities such as game lodges/farms, hotels, numerous guest houses and an excellent 18 hole championship golf course.
